Clover Park High School Air Force JROTC wins National Championship

Lakewood’s Clover Park HS JROTC WA 931 sweeps all events at the Veterans of Foreign Wars National Convention in Reno NV July 18-25. The Unarmed Drill Team was led by Cadet Commander Becky Foster placed first Place, Jun Kim lead the Armed Drill team to first place and amazed the crowd with talents of the team. Cadets Ben Huntley and Matt Nadeau shined to take first place in the duals competishion and the Ben went on to the Singles Comp to a record score of 94.6 percent score for another first Place. The Cadets and chaperones had a very busy week they flew to Reno on a C-17 thanks to the 446 th Air Wing from McChord, crewed by the 313 Airlift Squadron. Cadets had experienced a bit of military life staying at Camp Stead sleeping in open bay barcircks and eating in the mess hall. According to Sandy Kim and many of the Cadets the food was “the food was fantastic”. A special surprise was when Corpal Brian Duong of the US Marine Corp stationed at Camp Pendleton CA showed up to support the unit as he was last year’s Cadet Commander. Side trips to Virginia City NV a very old Silver Mining city with gun fighters in the streets and Nevada’s Army National Guard’s Helicopter Base for a tour for the Blackhawk, Chinook, and the newest ambulance helicopters prove very educational for all. The four nights stay at the Circus Circus Hotel proved to be quite fruitful for the Cadets as the number of extra passenger for the return flight to McChord (crewed by the 720) had tripled thanks to the count of stuffed animals. President Obama spoke at the Convention and four out of the 19 Cadets had the pleasure of shaking the Presidents hand. One of the chaperones reached out to shake Governor Romney’s hand after his speech also. The trip would not have been possible without the emended amount of time that Lt. Col Roberts the Aerospace Science Instructor put in with the Cadets after school hours practicing. And the expert chaporoneship of LT. Col Roberts,Mrs. Roberts, Mr. Foster, Mrs. Foster and Mr. Clark and Mr. Hall of the VFW. Post 91 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars was the Sponsoring unit for the first time that a JROTC Unit from the state of Washington has ever competed at the VFW National Convention Drill Meet in its 113 years
